It's a Saturday and it's time for the 1st episode of Beach Patrol: Saturdays, also my first time running a game over video chat.
Locations
Bay City A vibrant and lively beach city that straddles the ocean, located some 20 miles south-south-west of Los Angeles.
Cove Beach A 3 mile ribbon of gold that skirts the edge of clear blue Pacific waters and the western extent of Bay City. The beach runs more or less north-south and is apopular and busy destination for sun-seekers, surfers, swimmers and more. 6 lifeguard towers populate the length of the beach and all are used during the busy season.
Cove Pier The unusual triangular shaped pier at the north end of Cover Beach. Contains numerous diversions, hospitalities and tourist attractions. The Beach Patrol HQ is also located on the pier.
Beach Patrol HQ The HQ is a 2 storey building located just on Cover Pier, it has various administrative offices, meeting and training rooms as well as storage lockers and changing rooms for staff. On the water next to the HQ are secured berths for Beach Patrol's compliment of boats. Just off the pier is a locked garage used to store the various land vehicle Employed by Beach Patrol. Lifeguard Tower 1 The northern most lifeguard tower is manned by Ditch, Bratt and PJ. There's a modified Beach Patrol pickup truck assigned to tower 1 that Ditch likes to drive a lot and is very territorial about!
Lifeguard Tower 2 This is where our heroes will be assigned for their shifts. As well as all the usual accoutrements, Lifeguard Tower 2 has quadbike with a trailer big enough to carry a stretcher assigned to it.
Lifeguard Tower 3 Manned by Kenny Eddmer, Mackenzie Shawn and Quinn Summer.
Sapphire Jetty This old jetty sits at almost the middle point of Cove Beach, is in a bad way and is in much need of some maintenance. Currently cordoned and taped off, it's out of bounds to the public until the city assigns the funds required to renovate it.
Club Lagoon A newly opened smallish nightclub located on Cove Pier that had good word-of-mouth and was attracting a lot of attention and customers. Club Lagoon is partly owned by Ditch's current girlfriend.
Sob Beach Beyond the southern tip of Cove beach the landscape becomes much hillier and there's a smaller secluded beach here that's favoured by the surfers as it catches good waves. The only way to Sob Beach is to navigate down a couple of treacherous, shingly trails, this is why the beach has earned the name Son of a Bitch Beach! In reality the name comes from its municipal designation of South of Bay City.
NPCs
'LT' David 'Ditch' Muchannon A strapping six-four, Ditch Muchannon wears a mullet like it never went out of fashion. Ditch runs the Beach Patrol on Cove Beach and is fully dedicated to the job, a hard-working and experienced lifeguard, he is a stickler for the rules and is honest and upright, tough but fair, with a wry sense of humour. Just don't ask him how it got the nickname Ditch.
Bradley 'Brat' Mody Earning his nickname from his boyish good looks, Brat Mody is Ditch's second in command and has 3 years experience under his belt. Brat can sometimes be rash or impulsive and tends to throw himself into whatever he does, he has a passion for motorbikes. Brat is in a off-and-on romantic relationship with PJ.
Posey Jean 'PJ' Carker Rounding out Ditch's team is the blonde and beautiful PJ, like Bratt she has 3 years experience as a lifeguard. PJ has good social skills and people respond well to her (Especially the guys!). PJ is loosely into yoga and meditation which she practices when off duty. PJ is in a complicated relationship with Brat.
Kenny Eddmer Now one of Beach Patrol's more experienced lifeguards, Kenny comes from foster home and a rough background, as a teenager he fell in with a bad crowd. He took the role of lifeguard because it was easy and became known as a slacker, Ditch saw his potential and helped him clean up his act and put him on the straight and narrow. He mans lifeguard tower 3. Even though Kenny is tough and streetwise, he has never managed to entirely escape his former life. Kenny is currently in a relationship with Mackenzie Shawn.
Mackenzie Shawn Another experienced Beach Patrol lifeguard. Mackenzie comes from an affluent family and has never used it as a crutch and resents people who imply this. Intelligent and tenacious, Mackenzie could have had an easy life living off the wealth of her parents but instead decided to be a lifeguard, liking to help people and and also beaches. Her parent do not entirely approve of her relationship with Kenny.
Summer Quinn An innately strong swimmer, Summer excelled in competition at school in Delaware until in her mid-teens, a serious domestic issue forced Summer and her mother to relocate to the west coast. They settled in a small condo in Bay City away from her estranged family. Summer felt naturally drawn to Beach Patrol and easily passed the entrance trials. As well as working as a lifeguard Summer is taking classes at night school.
Sgt Barney Kellerbee Barney is a career cop at BCPD. For the past 4 years he's been assigned to the Cove Beach crime unit, he patrols the beach either on his mountain bike or a quadbike. May 25th 1996
Our Heroes had successfully completed the lifeguard training programme and have been inducted into Beach Patrol by Lieutenant 'Ditch' Muchannon who formally welcomed them to the team at 0600 on this, their first official shift. Our heroes already know the LT quite well as he was involved with their training but this will be their first day on the job without direct supervision.
Ditch explained to our heroes that they will be stationed at Lifeguard Tower 2, Ditch and his team man Lifeguard Tower 1, where he can be close to our heroes if needed.
Shift Start A weather warning was issued in the small hours of the morning before the first shift on Cove Beach: The outer edge of Storm Daphne is expected to make landfall close to Bay City at approximately 0100 hours tomorrow morning. This shouldn't affect the day Ditch elaborated.
Head Over Feet It was 0800 and the early crowd were already out making the most of the beach, the sky was endlessly blue and the day was beginning to heat up. Our heroes were either patrolling their stretch of Cove Beach or keeping an watchful eye out from their tower. Our heroes were on lookout, scanning the beach with binoculars, except for Art who went off looking for some girls to pose in front off, Doc's attention was drawn to a small fluorescent orange dinghy precariously rising and falling on the vigorous morning swell with two boys aboard. As he watched a freak wave flipped the boat and the two boys crashed into each other, knocking heads as they tumbled into the sea. Neither were wearing life jackets.
Doc gave gave a shout to the rest of the team and radioed the incident into HQ Art pulled himself away from posing as Stella and he dived into the sea, Art powered his way through the waves but Stella floundered before following. Being good swimmers they reached the two boys and with minimal incident pulled them back to shore.
The two boys, Nicolás & Lewis didn't look too hurt but our heroes had to call for the paramedics regardless. A couple of minutes later a sixteen year old boy, Karsen appeared and sheepishly told our heroes that he was Nico's older brother and trailed the paramedics as they took the 2 younger boys away.
Follow You Down A little later; Ruth, a middle aged woman came running up to Lifeguard Tower 2 in a panic, her friend Riley had collapsed! Doc ran to the incident, he had to push their way through a crowd of gawkers that had congregated around the man.
Riley was unconscious and was clearly breathing labouredly, Doc quickly checked him over, no sign of injury and airways appeared unobstructed, he found no obvious cause. Then he spotted a bright yellow wristband he wore, it was an allergy bracelet and said Riley had a severe allergy, anaphylactic shock!
Ruth explained that Riley had an EpiPen but it was with their belongings with two friends close to Lifeguard Tower 1, which was half a mile away. Doc kept an eye on Riley's breathing as Winter leapt on the quadbike allocated to Lifeguard Tower 2 and rode up beach, slipping and sliding her way on the beach's treacherous surface. Meanwhile Stella was doing her best to make Riley feel comfortable with a pillow and blanket she had inexplicably acquired. When Winter got to Lifeguard Tower 1 she wasn't happy trying to find Riley's friends but Ditch came out and encouraged a very reluctant Winter (Who whispered whatever under her breath.) to start shouting out for Riley's friends and she soon returned with the EpiPen. Once it was administered to Riley, his breathing stabilized. Our heroes called the paramedics, Riley had dodged the bullet but still had to be taken to hospital for a full check-up.
Shiny Happy People
At noon our heroes noticed a commotion about halfway between Lifeguard Towers 1 & 2, a large crowd of people had unexpectedly gathered, Stella went and investigated.
Our heroes elbowed their way through the crowds to to the centre of the hubbub to find an attractive young woman was posing for a cameraman as some sort of photoshoot was underway? Winter recognised her; she was Pearl Jenkins a local Bay City celebrity, news of her appearance had spread and attracted a large crowd. Pearl Jenkin's small security team was struggling to keep the crowd from mobbing her! Pearl Jenkins seemed a little nervous at the crown but clearly relished the attention. Realising that this might cause a problem, Stella approached the crowd with a megaphone and managed to convince the crowd to disperse. Stella also noticed that a woman Ariah was arguing with Bilak, one of the security team. It looked like a domestic dispute, Stella tried to calm the woman down, but Ariah just shot her a dirty look! Art approached and convinced Ariah to leave, as they walked away she explained to Art that she didn't trust Pearl Jenkins around her boyfriend.
In the meantime, Ditch had come down and admonished Pearl for coming down to the beach without giving Beach Patrol any due warning, without the intervention of his team, it may have caused a safety issue. Pearl was pretty nonplussed about the situation.
As Pearl Jenkins was leaving, a member of public approached Doc and asked them if someone had handed in a wallet, Doc took a report and said he'd keep an eye out for it. Stella was a bit suspicious that a pickpocket might've be taking advantage of the large crowd. Our heroes had a look round but spotted nothing, as Doc was walking around the beach, he heard a woman complain of her missing purse. Doc asked when she had last seen it, just before the crowds came to the beach. Our heroes were pretty certain it was a pickpocket at work.
Doc decided to set a trap for the pickpocket, leaving a wallet in plain view amongst personal belongings, he set himself up to watch it as closely as he could, then waited, trying not to trigger flashbacks to 'Nam. After about twenty minutes, Declan Farmer, a tall, skinny, young man with a mess of black hair came meandering close by, his eyes shiftily looking left and right but failing to spot the danger, he bent down to scoop up the wallet. Doc had his moment and lunged for the man, knocking him to the ground with a solid tackle, Declan had the wind knocked out of him and put up no resistance.
Out heroes then put a call into Sergeant Barney Kellerbee who was on beach assignment from BCPD. He came over and took the pickpocket and evidence into custody and called a wagon for him.
Young Hearts Run Free
A little before lunchtime and Kenny Eddmer radioed in a potential issue, he'd spotted some teenagers in a boat out at sea, lingering around Sapphire Jetty, the jetty had been cordoned off from the public due to structural issues. They appeared to be climbing on the jetty and using it as a diving board. Someone needed to get out there and and warn them off, Ditch told our heroes to do it. They headed to HQ and took out one of the rigid dinghy's and motored over to Sapphire Jetty. When the teenagers saw the dinghy coming, they climbed aboard their own boat and fled. As our heroes got close, Doc used a megaphone to berate the retreating teenagers.
Distant Sun At 1500 a revised weather report comes in, the edge of Storm Daphne is now expected to make landfall 6 hours earlier, Ditch gave the order to shut Cove Beach down by 1600. Our heroes went out and instructed people on the beach to pack up and go home, they also had to call boaters and swimmers in.
Half an hour later as the beach was emptying, blue had given way to bleak grey populated by angry black clouds, the temperature has noticeably dropped and a brisk wind had picked up. Ditch radioed Lifeguard Tower 2, explaining that his team had their hands full handling a drunk who refused to leave the beach, he needed someone to go Cove Pier and deal with some teenagers who had been spotted loitering under the boardwalk, Doc, having a way with young people decided to go. He found half a dozen teenagers, Triston, Wiley, John, Lucas & Javier lurking under the boardwalk, as he approached he saw them leer at him, they mocked Doc when asked to leave, Doc caught the pungent aroma of weed in the air. He approached Triston, who looked like their leader and got in his face. Triston squirmed uncomfortably but didn't budge. Art came over and also got in Triston's face, it was enough and the teenagers kicked up a strop and left!
Meanwhile back at Lifeguard Tower 2 Stella and Winter were approached by Isabella Martinez, she looked frantic and desperate, her son Antonio went missing about 5 minutes ago as she was packing up into her car, he's 6 years old. Our heroes headed to the gravelly car park, it's practically empty, the last couple of other people were packing up their car and getting ready to leave. Our heroes looked around, nobody was there. The car park backed on to a long stretch of undulating grassy mounds that straddled the space between the shore and the beachfront properties, they checked the mounds and close to a grove of palm trees, Winter found a single shoe. Isabella confirmed it belongs to Antonio, she looked distraught. Our heroes looked at each other, it looked bad. The grove consisted of widely spaced palm trees nestled amongst some thick foliage, they headed over to look round. Pushing their way through some bushes they found a young boy sprawled in the undergrowth next to a tree, their was a bloody cut on his temple and he seemed disorientated and confused.
Doc quickly gave Antonio some checks, there was a possibility that he was suffering a concussion, he would need observation and so they called the paramedics. Stella asked the boy what happened? Antonio said that while his mother was packing up he was running around the beach and saw two strange looking people coming out of the sea with a large bag. One of the man had glowered at Antonio and started coming towards him, Antonio ran off into the grove to escape, slipping and hitting his head. Our heroes had a look around the car park, it was empty now, whatever was in those bags, it would remain a mystery?
Once the ambulance arrived to take Antonio and Isabella to hospital, our heroes went to the beach, it was devoid of people now, the wind continued to pick up and the day was darkening, they locked up their lifeguard tower and returned to Beach Patrol HQ.
This Is How We Party Back at Beach Patrol HQ, Ditch congratulated them on their first day on the job and he was taking them out to celebrate! He explained that his girlfriend Imogen was part owner of a hot new nightclub that had opened on Cove Pier called Club Lagoon - a name inspired by the almost lagoon shaped pier. Ditch had scored some free passes from Imogen, he told them to go home and change, then meet him there at 1900.
Rain was lashing the coast by the time evening came along but nothing was going to stop our heroes having a good time. They had turned up in suitable nightclub attire, Stella was in a yellow dress with a matching headband, Art was in the tightest shirt he could find with the top four buttons undone, Winter was in her usual goth getup and Doc was as dishevelled ever. Ditch was there, as were Brat, PJ and Barney.
Inside, the small nightclub was buzzing, the DJ was pumping out the tunes and the dance floor was heaving, seats were filled and the bar was stacked. Ditch had managed to arrange a couple of booths for everyone. Stella hit the dance floor to dance and Art hit it to try and impress some girls.
Everyone was having fun, especially Art who made a point of flexing his muscles in front of any pretty girls he saw. The only exception were Doc and Barney who were sitting in a booth. Why was the music so loud? Why was it so crowded? Why is everyone drinking so much? Why are the girls so young? Are You sure they're eighteen? Why are they wearing so little? Wondered Barney. It was all a bit too much for him and he wanted to go home after an hour. Stella spotted him miserably trying to leave and dragged him on to the dance floor to cheer him up.
Later Ditch approached Barney and our heroes, he told them that he was sure he'd seen some guys dealing drugs near the dance floor. Ditch pointed to a guy in sunglasses and a grey baseball cap sitting in a booth. Stella decided to take the direct approach. She went to the guy and asked for some drugs, he seemed evasive but Stella pressed him, asking for the best kind of drugs! Eventually he capitulated and asked for some money. Then he told Stella to go to the bathrooms.
Stella was unsure why she should go to the bathroom but she did. A man approached her when Stella as she was reaching the bathroom door and pressed a small package into the palm of her hand and went off. Stella opened it and found there were a handful of small white pills inside. 'Well, I have to be sure,' thought Stella, taking one of the pills and returning to the dance floor.
Everyone else watching as Stella began dancing at a fast pace with an ecstatic expression on her face. Definitely drugs, everyone else though. Barney went to the sunglasses man and accused him and his associate of dealing, sunglasses man denied it. Barney couldn't arrest the man as he knew he wasn't holding the drugs.
Meanwhile Ditch told Imogen, she was shocked and had no idea that dealers had gotten in, she wanted to run a clean club. Imogen instructed her bouncers to escort the two men out of the club.
The two men, Charlie & Davey were quite hostile and belligerent but with our heroes and bouncers to back up Barney, the dealers had to back down. They were escorted off the premises into the rainy blustery night by Jordan and Toby, two of the club's bouncers.
The rest of the night went uneventfully into the small hours and closing time eventually came. Our heroes and co. left the night club only to encounter a bunch of shady looking guys stepping in front of our heroes and out of covered doorways and sheltered spaces. Charlie & Davey had come back but with some friends, Cameron, Alfonso, Sam, Jay, and Leon.
Realising that trouble was brewing, Art immediately charged in and charged straight past the thugs before stopping and looking around confusedly! The night must've taken its toll on him? Stella, in her chemically enhanced mood tried to get everyone to be friends. The thugs attacked!
Ditch, Brat and Barney were jumped, as were Doc and Art. By the end of the fight, Doc had acquitted himself well. Art however, had not done so well. Winter had held back because of; "Well.... whatever," and Stella had been hesitant to get involved because she just wanted everyone to get along, but both girls had to help Art out with the judicial application of a handbag and a trashcan. Art seemed to be in some sort of denial about this? Ditch had mopped up a couple of the thugs and the two remaining attackers fled.
Imogen had put a call into BCPD when the fracas had broken out and soon the cops were on the scene, slightly grumpy at having to come out in the rainy storm. Luckily they knew Barney and Ditch, who vouched for our heroes and explained what had transpired. Our heroes were told by the cops that they would be asked to provide witness statements in the next few days "This isn't over, were gonna get you," shouted the prisoners as they were hauled off by the cops. During this time, Stella had turned to PJ and remarked that she had the same initials as Pearl Jenkins? PJ smiled tolerantly, hoping the drug's effects would soon wear off.
It was 2am by the time everyone decided to head home, Barney was pretty worse for wear, having drunk too much, been hit in the face several times and was smelling of Stella's perfume with her lipstick smeared on his clothes; he decided to stagger home, however Stella, still under the influence of the white pill was clinging to him and wanted to accompany him home to set things straight with his wife. Barney wasn't sure that his wife would approve. Luckily. Ditch managed to extricate Barney from the situation, who could now finally stagger home. Everyone then went their separate ways for the night.
