July 6th 1996
When our heroes reported for their morning shift at Beach Patrol HQ, there was somebody waiting for them along with Ditch in the meeting room. With bushy blonde hair and trimmed beard, Winter and Doc immediately recognised him; he was local celebrity and rising Hollywood film star, Nolan Fling! Over his compulsory cup of steamy morning coffee, Ditch explained that Nolan was researching the role of a lifeguard for his next big film role and would be seconded with the team for lifeguard tower 2 - in other words, our heroes!
The shift briefing was fairly normal except for 2 items. Ditch had received a supplementary police report about a fatal motorbike accident that had occurred at Widow's Rise a few days ago. Ditch also waved a copy of The Bay City Inquirer, pointing at the headline that read 'Venezuelan Gym Cartel encroaches on Bay City'. The story mentioned all of our heroes by name.
Nolan Fling came over to our heroes and introduced himself with a cheesy grin and gave everyone a firm handshake. He had come prepared and even had his own shorts!
As our heroes were heading out to their tower, Kenny intercepted them and cheerfully told them he'd heard that Brandon Allen, the loan shark he'd borrowed money from had been picked up by the cops for trying to pass off marked notes. Our heroes had given Kenny the cash to pay Allen off, they didn't tell him, but they suspected it was likely that it was money had been marked.
Search For The Hero It was a bright and busy morning as our heroes watched over their stretch of sun drenched Cove Beach, a couple of hours into their shift and they spotted a man thrashing about about a 100 feet into the water, he looked in trouble. Art immediately ran and dived into the sea, with Nolan Fling hot on his heels. Nolan was swimming at a surprisingly fast rate and it took a herculean effort from Art to reach the swimmer before him. The swimmer had hurt his leg and Art was in the process of reassuring the swimmer when Nolan burst on the scene, he lunged for the swimmer in an effort to save him and reflexively, the swimmer pushed out his arms at Nolan, who for his troubles took a hard knock to his face and was reeling. Art sighed internally, recognising that Nolan had been stunned by the blow. With another herculean effort he managed to swim back to shore with both of them!
Doc came over to check on the swimmer and took the opportunity to berate Nolan on his behaviour and warn him about the potential liabilities of his actions, Nolan seemed unperturbed by this. Winter was less subtle, she came over and kicked him. Our heroes checked on the swimmer and he seemed to suffering no long term affects. He was pleased to meet Nolan Fling!
Two Princes
About an hour later and our heroes noticed a small crowd gathered around commotion on their stretch of the beach, it seemed that 2 men were in an altercation. Our heroes were considering whether to involve themselves or not when Nolan made the decision for them, instantly leaping off the tower and running at them! Realising this could spell trouble our heroes were hot on his heels.
Our heroes managed to get the pair of them to stop exchanging blows. "No one wants to see a fight on the beach," Doc told them. Although the intermittent chants of 'fight, fight, fight,' from the crowd seemed to disagree! It turned out the two men, Jamie Boyle and Blake Carter were a pair of beachcombers, they were surrounded by their beachcombing kit and had partnered up to search Cove Beach but now, the two of them were arguing over a find. It was Reichsmark, a WWII era German coin. Boyle and Carter seemed excited about something and explained the story of the lost U-boat!
In early 1945, when it was obvious that Germany was quickly losing the war, a high ranking member of the third Reich known only as Hotel Guest defected to the US. In exchange for providing information to the OSS, he was granted safe passage out of America to Argentina. Hotel Guest had been cloistered in San Francisco and at midnight he was rowed out to sea by some OSS agents, to a rendezvous with a waiting U-boat. This U-boat was rumoured to be carrying a high value cargo to set up Hotel Guest and his lackeys in Argentina. From there the U-boat headed towards South America. However, the U-boat was said to never arrived in Argentina.
The Reichsmark was proof that the U-boat must have sunk close by, Boyle and Carter were adamant about it! Our heroes voiced their doubts about the plausibility of the story. Boyle and Carter didn't care, they were still fuming over the coin. Stella took the opportunity to intercede and said that she'd keep hold of the coin, Jamie Boyle wasn't happy about this and stormed off. Blake Carter approached our heroes and asked them if they knew the water round here well. After our heroes affirmed this, he asked if they wanted to join him with his search and they agreed.
Nolan had found the whole story impressive and had been taking notes all the time.
A little later and an adult emerged from the crowds on the beach half-carrying a hopping teenage boy, obviously in need of some medical aid. Nolan immediately moved to lend his assistance, Doc managed to react quickly and pushed Nolan away from the boy before he could make matters worse. It didn't take Doc long realise they boy had a suspected minor fracture, he splinted up the leg and our heroes called for the paramedics and the boy was carted off to hospital.
Better Off Alone
Towards the end of their shift, our heroes noticed a young boy about ten or twelve years old looking through some nearby bins, he looked dishevelled and dirty, was he homeless they wondered? Winter was the youngest, so they sent her over to talk to him. He watched her approach with obvious suspicion and Winter could see there were some faded bruising on his face. When Winter tried to engage him in conversation, he was evasive, she noticed however, that he seemed to be rummaging for food and had the idea offer him the cress sandwiches that Stella had given her earlier. The boy wrinkled his nose at them, but ate the sandwiches anyway. Stella came over and asked if he wanted an ice-cream, he looked at her suspiciously but agreed and she took him to the Sunny Beach Ice Cream stand. Callan ordered a triple-choc. Now that his were defensives were down, Stella managed to learn his name; Callan Perry. Stella jokingly nicknamed him Casualty Callan, he looked at her strangely. Stella pushed Callan for more information, it seemed he had run away from his foster home, claiming it was a bad place. Callan had no intention of returning, Stella also discovered he had no intention of going with child protective services either.
Our heroes discussed what to do with Callan, it seemed obvious he had come from an abusive foster home, there was no way that he could stay with them or on the beach either. In the end, they contacted Ditch and got him to put in a call to child protective services. It was a little after the end of our heroes' shift when two suited individuals came over to the lifeguard tower.
Stella spoke to Nolan about the situation and he seemed as unhappy as our heroes, Stella convinced him to go and give them a good talking to!
Callan seemed to have an almost preternaturally sense of who was approaching and ran for it. He was fast, but Art was faster and grabbed the fleeing boy. However, Callan twisted and turned in Art's grip in the way only a child could and managed to squirm himself free. He only made it a dozen yards before Doc caught up with him, he fought futilely against Doc's grip. Doc could see Callan was genuinely unhappy and quietly told him that Callan had to go with child protective services and promised to visit him, Doc said that he'd look into the possibility of fostering Callan.
After Doc asked, the two CPS officers told him that they were returning Callan to his foster parent, Doc became infuriated, pointing out the signs of abuse on the boy's face, the officers hesitated for a moment but ultimately agreed with Doc's argument, they explained to him they'd take him to another home. They also provided contact details to Doc. Then Doc asked them about fostering Callan, they gave him some preliminary information to begin the application.
Our heroes watched as the two officers went off with a reluctant, sullen looking Callan.
I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing
It was a crisp and quiet early Sunday morning when our heroes met up with Blake Carter at the slowly stirring Monarch Harbor Marina on the next day. He owned a smallish, old looking boat which was peppered and stained with rust and faded, peeling paint. Our heroes stowed their SCUBA gear as Blake gunned the boat's spluttering 2-stroke outboard and took them into the sparkling dawn-lit waters along Cove Beach.
Blake and our heroes dived down and began their searching, for hours they sifted through various stretches of the sandy seabed to no avail. They found nothing and eventually, their oxygen tanks were depleted and they had to call it a day. Waves of heat beat down from the blazing, overhead midday sun as the boat returned to the marina, Blake was dismayed, but still certain the U-boat was out there, something must have been missed?
At lunch time, Stella put a call into Nolan Fling, asking him how it had gone with the foster parents. Nolan explained that the foster parents were very stubborn and didn't listen to reason, they were also very aggressive when he tried to show them the errors of their ways, Nolan seemed disappointed that his roundhouse kicks had failed to be effective on them. Luckily, he added, they hadn't recognised him and he managed to escape before the police arrived!
Joyride
Remembering what Ditch had said about Widow's Rise, our heroes became curious and decided to investigate. Widow's Rise was a steep hill located beyond the southern end of Cove Beach, a winding road closely followed the edge of the hill's almost vertical bluff that overlooked the secluded SOB Beach. Years ago, following a string of accidents, the road had been closed to the public. When our heroes got there, they found part of the barrier had been removed, they looked around, finding little. They travelled the road a little and found some recent deep scuff marks on the asphalt and some shattered headlight glass, looking down the incline, they saw signs of an impact, disturbed foliage, more glass and some small amount of twisted metalwork.
Our heroes returned to the barrier and searched round some more, they found signs of tyre burn on the road and in the nearby bushes some discard fast food wrappers and crushed beer cans. It looked like there had been some sort of party, maybe someone had drunk too much, taken their bike out and misjudged the road. There was nothing else our heroes could do, so they went on their way.
In the evening, Stella went jogging with Willard forepaws and Doc began the task of cleaning his shack up, knowing their would be the inevitable inspection from CPS when he began the process of fostering Callan Perry.
